Welcome to EcoVelo. This site is the public expression of our personal commitment to reduce our impact on the environment by employing bicycles as our primary mode of transport. By sharing what we learn from this endeavor, while also providing an aesthetically pleasing experience that celebrates the beauty of the bicycle and the joys of everyday bike riding, we hope to inspire others to make a similar commitment.

As of January 1, 2012, this site is no longer being updated. It will remain live at this location as a resource for the transportation cycling community until at least January 1, 2014.

Over the 3.5 years that EcoVelo was active, we generated 3,320 posts of various sorts including road tests, product reviews, op-ed pieces, technical articles, advocacy and infrastructure news pieces, and a myriad of other tidbits related to using bicycles for transportation. Along with our regular daily blog posts, we also curated an extensive commuter bicycle gallery and a large collection of bicycle commuter profiles. Two of our most popular features were our Reader Photo Contests and the Bike Commuting 101 instructional series for beginners (see below on this page).

Probably the best way to surf around the site is by using the links in the left-hand sidebar. If there’s something specific you’re looking for, you might also try the search box at the top left. And, if you have lots of time to burn, you can always peruse our massive Archive Page that includes direct links to each-and-every one of the 3,300 + posts.

Starting today, we’re taking a week off from the blog. This will be the first significant break we’ve taken since starting EcoVelo 3.5 years ago (the longest break prior to this was 3 days). It’s been a busy, busy year and we’re looking forward to some quality time away from the computer to re-charge our batteries. If you haven’t done so before, now would be a great time to dig through the archives to catch up on some of the nearly 3,300 articles we’ve posted since May of 2008.

Due to the overwhelming response to our call for bicycle commuter profiles, we removed the entries from the main flow of the website to avoid overwhelming our regular daily content. As anticipated, after the initial rush the number of entries has slowed to a trickle, so it’s time to place the profiles back in the main blog timeline and enter each new profile as an individual post. Like with our photo contests, as you scroll back through archive pages from the main entry page you’ll encounter blocks of profiles that were posted en masse, but as those drift further down the timeline it will become less of an issue.

Going forward, the complete set of profiles can be accessed by either clicking on the “Bicycle Commuter Profiles” link at the top of every page, or clicking on the same in the left hand column under the “Categories” heading.

I’m finally caught up on posting your Bicycle Commuter Profiles. We’re currently at approximately 110 entries (phew!). Thank you so much for your overwhelming response to the call for entries. It’s been so enjoyable reading all of your stories (I’ve read every one). This is an amazing resource for new bike commuters and we expect it will continue to grow over time.

If you’ve submitted a Profile but you can’t find it, please drop me a note. In the flurry of posting so may entries it’s not inconceivable that I missed one here or there. I want to be 100% sure that every Profile that was submitted is posted.
