Name: Charles Vail
Location: Eatonville, Washington, America
Started bike commuting: I first started in 1972
Commute distance (one way): 19 to 23 miles maximum depending on the route
Describe your commute: I infrequently commute for 7-8 miles on country highway and 11 miles in the urban jungle. I sometimes do a partial commute which can range from 12 to 14 miles one way. With my current work schedule I am not able to bicycle commute as much as I would like.
Describe your bike and accessories: I own and ride several bicycles but my main ride now is a Surly Long Haul Trucker built from the frame up. I plan on home built racks and a generator lighting system soon. I recently acquired a Rivendell SimpleOne and will ride it also.
What bit of advice would you like to share with new bike commuters?: Get a rear view mirror, wear a brightly colored shirt and use gloves. Set your bicycle up with fenders, wide tires, good lighting and a way to carry stuff. Find a saddle that fits you well and adjust your bicycle to fit your body perfectly. Do not trust automobile drivers especially motor home drivers. Watch out for people passing you who also then turn right in front of you and also watch out for people making left turns and pulling out in front of you.
