Bicycle Commuter Profile: Aaron Ximm

Bicycle Commuter Profile

Name: Aaron Ximm
Location: San Francisco, CA
Started bike commuting: 1994 (off and on); current commute started this year
Commute distance (one way): 6 miles

Describe your commute: Gently rolling urban San Francisco: through the heart of the Mission district, along Valencia Street’s wonderful new ‘green wave’ of lights timed for cyclists in the primary commute direction, then through ‘the Wiggle’ avoiding hills through the lower Haight to the Panhandle (tree-shrouded bike lines weaving through park) and into Golden Gate park to Park Presidio and north. Only the last-leg climb to upper Bernal Hill at the end of the return commute is a true San Francisco hill… and boy is it.

Describe your bike and accessories: Civia Loring 9-speed internal hub, which has become a new animal with Schwalbe Fat Frank tires with low inflation; stem swapped from 12 degree stock to 35 degrees for a more city-bike upright posture.

What bit of advice would you like to share with new bike commuters?: Take the time to find the bike you truly love, one that makes you happy and excited to ride it every day.

Don’t settle for something that isn’t quite right, and don’t let ‘logic’ sway you over your gut. Wrong color? Move on. Not sexy stylish fast eye-catching or understated enough? Keep looking. Great deal on something not-quite-right? Save a few more pennies for the one you know you really want.
