I recently added a 2011 Mercier Nano Mini Velo to my stable of bicycles. I own two other 20″ Dahon folders and really enjoy the utility and ride of a smaller wheeled bicycle. When I saw the Nano on Bikes Direct website for $299, I had to take the gamble.

I knew I would immediately change out some parts to make it work for me… “nearing 50 and over 200lbs.” What I didn’t want to do was to turn a $299 bike into a $1000 +bike, like other mini velos.

So, here is the list so far:

  • Mercier Nano – $299 shipped
  • Schwalb Marathon Racer tires, tubes, rim tape – $75
  • Kalloy Stem – $15
  • Nitto Albatross Bar – Free….Thank You …EcoVelo… photo contest.
  • Oury Grips – $15
  • Brake Levers – $15
  • Gel Seat “Selle Royal” – $25
  • Delta Axel Rods – $12
  • Water Bottle and Cage – $8
  • Total: $464……priceless to me

The Nano is super fun, especially for city riding. It is an agile little bike and you soon forget it is not full sized. The parts are fairly low end, but fully functional and utilitarian. I use this bike for short runs and unencumbered rides with just a u-lock in my back pocket. My new summer bike has a smooth ride, upright casual position, and the feel of steel. The Nano makes me smile and most everybody else who sees me on it (think circus bear…).

Best Wishes,
Glenn Budak
