Bicycle Commuter Profile: Tim Musa

Bicycle Commuter Profile

Name: Tim Musa
Location: Chicago Suburbs, IL
Started bike commuting: 2005
Commute distance (one way): 6.5 miles

Describe your commute: A pretty basic ride through neighboring suburbs on light traffic side streets. I’ve only got one road that has major traffic on it, and that is only for a few blocks. I started after my wife and I purchased new recumbent trikes, and I figured I should really try to get my money’s worth on this purchase. Of course, after commuting fairly regularly one year, life happened and I wound up taking a bit over two years off. I started up again in earnest in 2009, and am coming up on my two year mark.

Bicycle Commuter Profile

Describe your bike and accessories: After commuting regularly on my recumbent trike, I decided last year that I could reward myself and get a new recumbent SWB bike. So now my main ride is an ActionBent Fusion. I’ve got about 750 miles on it since getting it early last Fall. Of course, in the last few weeks, I have had four flats, so it is now sitting in the garage waiting for new tires and tubes. I have outfitted it with a MagicShine light set, and an AirZound horn. Both of which have come in handy many times.

What bit of advice would you like to share with new bike commuters?: Mainly, that it is possible. Yeah, it may take a while for the first few months even, but you will get your legs if you keep at it. And you don’t need to commute every day. I started out just commuting two days a week, and just added on to that as I acclimated. I still don’t regularly do a full five day week, since there are days that I need my car at work. So, just keep at it and bike when you can.

Wouldn’t happen to be the south suburbs would it? I just moved to the south suburbs of Chicago and I’m trying to build a community down here. Many people ride, but there doesn’t seem to be a culture to speak of.

I did create a Chainlink group for us though. http://www.thechainlink.org/group/southsuburbancyclists

Tim, that seems to be a pretty big change going from a trike to a two-wheeler. Did (do) you have any issues with “wobbly” starts in traffic?

I would love to take my Anura delta trike to work, but parking it outside and locking it would be a problem. How did you park the Hase?

Very cool. I commute to work via recumbent trike too. I live in Southern California so I can ride pretty much year round. Enjoyed the writeup and I like your SWB bike! I have borrowed a friend’s High-racer which was fun, but I think a lower bike like yours would be easier to use as a commuter.
