Bicycle Commuter Profile

Name: Dann Golden-Collum
Location: Anchorage AK USA
Started bike commuting: 1969
Commute distance (one way): 5 miles

Describe your commute: Just a few hills. I have several routes to choose from – direct along city streets, or one of the many trails in Anchorage.

Describe your bike and accessories: The bike is a 1987 Bianchi Axis. It has Bianchi’s Superset Tange double-butted chrom-moly frame and fork with some nice lugs. Still riding with the original Celeste saddle (although it’s going down fast), original Suntour XCD derailleurs, original seat post, bars, Dia Compe 984 cantilever brakes and Aero Compe levers. The non-original includeds Mavic A719 rims with 36h, Shimano 105 hubs, Topeak Road Morph tire pump (recommended), Michelin City 700-32 tires (don’t like them – switching soon) and Transit waterproof panniers.

What bit of advice would you like to share with new bike commuters?: RIDE! There were many years I could have commuted but chose to drive. With today’s bikes and accessories, a person can outfit themselves to ride in any weather, on nearly any surface, at nearly any place on this planet. Of course, a person can ride wearing almost anything appropriate for the weather. I rode for years without eVent or Gore Tex or spandex. Some wool and some linen works pretty good.
