Bicycle Commuter Profile: Robert Hill

Bicycle Commuter Profile

Name: Robert Hill
Location: Clemson, SC
Started bike commuting: 1 Month ago.
Commute distance (one way): 7 miles

Describe your commute: My commute is totally on city streets, with bike lanes through all but 2 sections (about 1.5 miles total). I go through Clemson University’s campus, over the Seneca River, and then on to a divided highway for the last mile to my office.

Describe your bike and accessories: Bike #1: Globe Haul 1, kitted out with a full set of lights, one Sunlite Grocery Getter pannier, one Axiom Hunter grocery pannier, bottle cage, fenders, Bell mini pump, and a cycle-computer.

Bike #2: Crappy Diamondback Edgewood. This is my backup bike for days when I am doing something cool with the Haul, or have to go to a place where I wouldn’t feel safe leaving my Haul unattended.

What bit of advice would you like to share with new bike commuters?: As a new commuter myself, the best advice I can give is to just do it. It is far easier than I ever imagined, and getting rid of my car has been extremely beneficial to my bank account. On top of that, I’d say to take the lane and not try to hug the side of the road. People will get mad, but your safety is the paramount priority.
