Bicycle Commuter Profile

Name: Rob Thomson
Location: Sapporo City, Japan
Started bike commuting: When I was in middle school
Commute distance (one way): 5km

Describe your commute: Right through the center of Sapporo City; grid-pattern streets, wide roads, plenty of room, cycling mainly with well-behaved taxis. I commute from home to university (Hokkaido University), which means that the last 5 minutes of the commute (far too short) is through the lovely green university grounds.

Describe your bike and accessories: 2011 Surly Karate Monkey with Freeload racks and Planet Bike Cascadia fenders. Very soon the bike will have a Shimano Alfine 8-speed on the rear and Alfine dynamo hub wired to a B+M Lumotec IQ Cyo R senso plus light. I chose the Karate Monkey because we get up to 6m of snow here, and the locals swear by big wheeled bikes.

What bit of advice would you like to share with new bike commuters?: You don’t have to go overboard with your commuting bike gear, but do err on the side of quality. You do get what you pay for!
