Bicycle Commuter Profile

Name: Jim
Location: Palmdale, CA, USA
Started bike commuting: 2004
Commute distance (one way): Currently 8-miles each way. In years past in Utah, 26 miles each way, and did all varieties of commuting; full bike, 1/2 car/1/.2 bike, bike/train/bike.

Describe your commute: 8-miles slightly downhill, downwind to work. Then, back up the hill into a seasonal (Jan – Dec.) 20-25 mph southwest wind every afternoon. A third of the ride is residential and safe, the remainder of the ride involves narrow shoulderless roads with no bike lanes, and 50-60 mph speed limits. I also ride to the store for quick errands, and to the pool for lap swimming whenever I can.

Describe your bike and accessories: I currently commute with a 2009 Surly LHT. Over the last year I have added a saddle bag, handlebar bag, and two-legged kickstand. Next up, a hub generator light system.

What bit of advice would you like to share with new bike commuters?: I finally have learned that speed is not the most important factor. Riding the bike, is. Keep it simple and relaxed. It just takes a little planning and a change of mindset to lengthen your day just a little to be able enjoy those calm, cool, lovely sunrise rides to work. Those peaceful mornings make up for the windy hot rides home!
