Bicycle Commuter Profile

Name: Brett
Location: New Haven, CT
Started bike commuting: Restarted in 2011
Commute distance (one way): 4 miles

Describe your commute: One third through a hilly, wooded park with twisty-turny roads, one third through a quiet residential neighborhood, and one third through a small urban college campus.

Describe your bike and accessories: Rivendell Bleriot, Velocity Synergy 650B rims, Shimano XT hubs, Grand Bois Hetres, Phil Wood BB, Sugino XD2 triple, Shimano 9 speed cassette, Nitto stem, Nitto Albatross handlebars, Brooks B17 Special saddle, Nitto seat post, Pass & Stow porteur rack, Wald basket, Nitto rear rack, Sackville saddle bag with Nitto quick release, copper Crane bell.

What bit of advice would you like to share with new bike commuters?: Stick to the streets, not the sidewalks. They belong to us, so use them. Try to obey the local traffic laws, as this earns the respect of other people on the road. Get a decent rack and bag system to put the load on the bike, avoid messenger bags and backpacks.
