Bicycle Commuter Profile

Name: Steve B
Location: Sydney, NSW, Australia
Started bike commuting: About a year ago
Commute distance (one way): 6km (~4 miles)

Describe your commute: I am lucky enough to have a commute that involves crossing the beautiful Sydney Harbour via the Harbour Bridge (in a dedicated cycle lane) then ride through Sydney’s historical Rocks area and into the city all via road but using the less busy one way streets. The commute takes about 15 mins door to door, the same trip by bus takes about 25.

Describe your bike and accessories: A mid 80s Australian made “Protour” 12 speed road bike. Completely stripped and frame treated for rust and powdercoated, rebuilt with a shimano nexus 8 speed internal hub with coaster brake, “ladies” style handlebars that have been flipped, a custom made timber box that comfortably fits my gym bag and most importantly my trusty Brooks saddle.

What bit of advice would you like to share with new bike commuters?: Spend the time in a non busy period (ie the weekend) working out your route. You dont want to be spat out onto a super busy road in peak hour traffic on your first day.
