Location: Morro Bay, CA, USA
Started bike commuting: April 2009
Commute distance (one way): 15 miles
Describe your commute: Hwy 1 south of Morro Bay is a 4 lane express way, with 8 foot shoulders, that passes through hilly ranch land, by a college, a National Guard Camp, and a university, then through historic downtown San Luis Obispo. Deer, wild turkey, wild pig, coyote, fox and many domesticated animals, as well as loads of cyclists can be seen along this stretch of road. Early morning is my favorite.
Describe your bike and accessories: One year ago (1,250 miles ago) I built up a Bianchi San Jos8, inspired by “hippie Pete’s” bike, a tourer from Rhode Island who accepted an offer to join our party at a friends house, while passing through. I’ve ran fenders and lights through the winter, but am happiest when she’s stripped down for speed. I recently switched to the S-A Titanico and love it.
What bit of advice would you like to share with new bike commuters?: Find someone as great as my friend Scott to ride with. Time flies by while we chat our way to work in the mornings. He keeps me riding even when the afternoon headwinds reach 35 mph (normal for spring and summer, here). Also, have a great coffee spot at the end of the trip to plop down at.
