Bicycle Commuter Profile: Phil L.

Name: Phil L.
Location: Toronto, ON Canada
Started bike commuting: 3+ years ago
Commute distance (one way): 5mi / 8km

Describe your commute: My commute starts near a busy intersection but quickly takes me through some zigzag neighborhood streets before entering the local park trail system. From there the bulk of my ride follows a paved path that meanders beside the Don River. The last few blocks take me back out into city traffic where I’m able to travel in a rush hour shred bus/bike lane.

Describe your bike and accessories: I have 2 bikes that I use to commute. The first is a single speed Raleigh Oneway – the other is a Raleigh Classic Roadster. On the 2 days that I take my children to daycare I use the Roadster with its internal 3-speed hub to help hall the bike trailer. The rest of the week I use the Oneway. Both bikes have rear racks with the Oneway adding a Velo Orange front rack for those days when I only need to carry in my lunch. The Roadster has also had a Selle Anatomica sadle added as well as an upgraded handlebar, stem, grips and a double kickstand (helps to load and unload the kids into the trailer).

What bit of advice would you like to share with new bike commuters?: Don’t buy more bike then you need, but be sure to buy the right bike. I’m amazed that I can get to work on most days with a single speed – the 3 speed (obviously) takes the edge off things. I use to ride a 27 speed road bike and can’t really remember why I ever needed that many gears!!!

And do yourself a favor and buy a good set of paniers and rack(s). You can easily start off with a back pack but you’ll soon want that steaming hot loaf off your back!
