Bicycle Commuter Profile

Name: Ash L.
Location: Chicago, IL
Started bike commuting: March 2010
Commute distance (one way): 3.5 miles

Describe your commute: I shuttle my kiddo to and from school twice a day and run most of my errands via bike usually riding about 14 miles a day entirely on congested city streets. I try to use the quieter residential roads over main arterials whenever possible.

Describe your bike and accessories: My “minivan” is a Madsen bucket bike and my personal shuttle is a Raleigh Sport. My days of riding road bikes with drop bars and without full fenders and chain guards are over but I’m loving dolling my rides up with gaudy garland and tacky vanity plates.

What bit of advice would you like to share with new bike commuters?: Don’t let yourself get psyched out. The weather, wind, traffic, distance – all of it – always seem much worse than they are once you’re on your bike. As a weather wienie, I never thought I could be a year round cyclist but once you can negotiate yourself down to 40F, you can do 35F or 25F or even 5F. Sometimes I sweat more in 10F than I do in 90F.
