Bicycle Commuter Profile

Name: Alan G.
Location: Ephrata PA USA
Started bike commuting: 14 years ago
Commute distance (one way): 12 miles

Describe your commute: Mostly rolling terrain. Back roads through the edge of one town and into the one where I work. Plenty of traffic, especially coming home.

Describe your bike and accessories: Soma Smoothie ES. Compact crank, Brooks B17 Special saddle. VO front rack and champagne bag, Surly nice rear rack with Carradice camper long flap. MKS Grip King pedals. Not much I can’t take by way of clothes and food. Not much I can’t pick up on the way home to conslidate trips.

What bit of advice would you like to share with new bike commuters?: Ease into it. Don’t become a slave to it. When it is super hot, or super cold or raining, take a day off so as to not get burned out, especially if your commute is longer, you work in the heat, and you don’t sit at a desk all day. Don’t let others expectations put you in a box. They may not ride as far, work as hard physically at their vocation, or spend time in the elements at their vocation.
