Tuesday Morning Commute: Summertime Fog

Summertime Fog

Just when I thought it couldn’t get any stranger, I woke up to tule fog this morning. Here’s a bit about tule fog from Wikipedia (emphasis added by me):

Tule fog (pronounced /ˈtuːliː/) is a thick ground fog that settles in the San Joaquin Valley and Sacramento Valley areas of California’s Great Central Valley. Tule fog forms during the late fall and winter (California’s rainy season) after the first significant rainfall. The official time frame for tule fog to form is from November 1 to March 31. This phenomenon is named after the tule grass wetlands (tulares) of the Central Valley. Accidents caused by the tule fog are the leading cause of weather-related casualties in California.

My lights were dead since I haven’t used them in a month, but fortunately, I had some fresh batteries ready to go. It was a pleasant ride, though I ended up being wetter than when I got caught in the rain without a jacket last week. To top off the weather weirdness, it’s supposed to reach 80F today and near 90F by Thursday. Nothing short of bizarre.

Every year I visit your area for a summer camp in the Tahoe National Forest. I watch the weather for weeks before, trying to guess how hot it will be in July. One year downtown Sacramento was 100 degrees at noon; the next year it was 75 and raining. Same day and time. Now it’s going to be 80 and 90 in this week. Isn’t that cooler than usual for June? Your weather reports are far better and more entertaining than Weather.com…

Might not be sunny and 70, but I think the fog is beautiful. Especially if you don’t have to drive in it…
