Bicycle Commuter Profile: Kendall Hill

Bicycle Commuter Profile

Name: Kendall Hill
Location: Eagle Mountain, UT, USA
Started bike commuting: Last fall
Commute distance (one way): 6 miles (with a 34 mile bus ride in the middle)

Describe your commute: 5 miles, then a 34 mile bus ride to the city, then a 1 mile ride to the office. The first 5 miles is along a shared-use path. 3 miles of that path is in the middle of nowhere. No street lights, no houses, nothing! During the fall, it can get really, really dark in the morning. One morning, I came across a jogger who was running with no lights. Didn’t see him until he was right in front of me. Scared the hell out of me!

Describe your bike and accessories: A pepto-pink ’94 Specialized Allez Pro. I bought the frame off of eBay with the intent of painting it some other color. I built it up, and the color stuck.

What bit of advice would you like to share with new bike commuters?: If you ride with cleats and clipless pedals, leave a pair of shoes at work. The less you have to carry with you – either on the bike or your person – the better,
