Bicycle Commuter Profile: Gareth

Name: Gareth
Location: Cambridge, Cambridgeshire
Started bike commuting: 1994
Commute distance (one way): 10 miles

Describe your commute: Mostly rural and exposed. Head through some small villages before a final 5 mile hack across unlit flat fenlands. In the summer I head south for up to 25 mile spin on the way home. I’m lucky to be able to have a shower at work so take in a change of clothes, leaving towel, shoes and trousers at work.

Describe your bike and accessories:
Genesis Skyline fixed gear with rack and full guards.
Altura pannier
Radbot 1000 rear
Cat eye single plus
Garmin edge 500
Cycling shoes with “Yorkshire overshoes” in the cold and wet.

What bit of advice would you like to share with new bike commuters?:
Don’t overstretch yourself, it’s supposed to be fun.
Wear appropriate clothes.
Learn to take the assertive position. John Franklin’s cycle craft is a good read.
Obey all the rules, don’t give them an excuse to cut you up.
Grin like a fool and enjoy it.
