Bicycle Commuter Profile: Brian Dumont

Name: Brian Dumont
Location: Long Beach, Ca., U.S.
Started bike commuting: 2008
Commute distance (one way): ~4 miles

Describe your commute: A few back residential streets, a bit of urban mess and about a mile of industrial insane traffic.

Describe your bike and accessories: Currently I’m on a Raleigh Sojourn (love it!) with Axiom Seymore saddlebags (no more sweatyback from the backpack) and a Forte adjustable stem which is set at 30 degrees to bring the handlebar a couple centimeters above the seat…perfect for an old slow guy like myself! I also use Planet Bike headlights and taillights. I finally, after not having driven since October, sold my truck and am car free! Emphasis on FREE by the way!

What bit of advice would you like to share with new bike commuters?: Don’t be afraid! I understand reading on line and in blogs sounds like cycling is a death-defying act, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth! Remember when you were a kid and your parents had no qualms about you riding anywhere so long as you were back before the streetlights came on? Cycling is still that safe, despite what anyone might tell you. And don’t worry about having the “right” gear. I started on an old mountain bike, and loved it from the start! Just be prepared to feel healthier (once the legs break in, lol) and to be HUNGRY!!!
