Bicycle Commuter Profile

Name: T. Jay Fowler
Location: Berkeley, CA
Started bike commuting: Four years ago.
Commute distance (one way): 2 Miles

Describe your commute: Berkeley has amazing bicycle boulevards, with traffic calming measures (circles at intersections, wide bike lanes outside of the door zone, and signal controlled crossings of major avenues). I bike using these boulevards, and have inside the office bike parking.

Describe your bike and accessories: I have a Globe Vienna 2 which, in my mid-life crisis, I have modified quite a bit. I have added Deore LX hubs, Dyad rims (very strong), 36 spokes (hand-built), Vittoria Randonneur 700x 40c tires. I’ve added a Gamoh basket to the front and have basic grocery panniers on the back. I added a Civia Loring handlebar for better upright riding.

What bit of advice would you like to share with new bike commuters?: Don’t fear the rain. Rising in the rain is a wonderful experience. Conversely, having a bike at work on a sunny afternoon is a great excuse to take the long way home. My favorite part of having a bike in my day to day life is the ability to use it for grocery shopping — no more endless loops in crowded parking lots.
