Bicycle Commuter Profile: Carice

Name: Carice
Location: Cambridge MA
Started bike commuting: Twenty years ago (to high school)
Commute distance (one way): 5 miles if I go by streets, 6 ish If I go by the MUP

Describe your commute: Most days and all through the winter I go on city streets, about half residential streets and half arterials. When I’m less rushed, I take the MUP that runs along the Charles river to enjoy the view and the weather. I’m mostly carfree, so I do most of my grocery shopping and other errands by bike too, mostly in Cambridge and the surrounding suburbs.

Describe your bike and accessories: My daily ride is a 70’s Raleigh Sports that I had powdercoated and built up with mostly modern components- Nexus 8 speed IGH and Nexus generator Hub. Fenders and full chainguard make it an all weather animal. My favorite accessories are my Edeluxe light which has the brightest best light pattern, and my repurposed trout-creel front basket. Having the right bike makes it easier.

What bit of advice would you like to share with new bike commuters?: I’d take the emphasis off commuting, and put the emphasis on transportation. Use your bike to go to the store, to go to dinner to go to get coffee. You don’t have to ride every day to consider yourself a transportation cyclist, it’s fine to set limits you’re comfortable with (not riding in the rain/ cold/ dark). Once you get used to riding, it becomes the easiest option, and you’ll find yourself riding more and more often.
