Bicycle Commuter Profile: Jon Benn

Name: Jon Benn
Location: Albany, NY
Started bike commuting: Mid 1980’s
Commute distance (one way): 4.5 miles

Describe your commute: Suburban side streets with a few short sections of 4 lane heavy traffic. Use of alleys behind strip malls when the snow clears eliminates most of the heavy traffic areas. Real consistent April through November.

Describe your bike and accessories: Current commuter is a 2009 Fuji Cambridge with Nexus 8 IGH. Dropped stock gearing form 38-16 to 34-19 which is much easier when loaded. Stock flat fenders and rear rack. Arkel bags, Brooks B17 saddle. Replaced mustache bar with a flat bar with bar ends. Older Light & Motion headlight, Planet Bike blinkie out back and lots of reflective tape. Redline BMX platform pedals.

What bit of advice would you like to share with new bike commuters?: 1) Its not a race! Arrive relaxed, not gassed. 2) Don’t worry about what other’s think. Just smile and tell the uninitiated that you have a blast on every ride.
