Bicycle Commuter Profile: Helton Moraes

Bicycle Commuter Profile

Name: Helton Moraes
Location: Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil
Started bike commuting: One year ago
Commute distance (one way): 4 km (2.5 miles)

Describe your commute: Mostly through a heavily trafficked avenue with many crossings and lights, through a rock-paved-road at the end.

Describe your bike and accessories: Trekking-commuter converted chromoly mountain bike with hub generator, internal-geared-hub, fenders, rear rack, sprung leather saddle, 26 inch wheels, and balloon tires.

What bit of advice would you like to share with new bike commuters?: You can’t be too well-equipped regarding rain (fenders), traffic signaling (lights, reflectives, bell, helmet-mounted mirror), and behaviour (always signaling your moves, constantly watching other vehicles and pedestrians). The more you behave “right”, the more others respect you. The more you take risks, the more unprotected you get.

That looks like a great commuter bike for a busy city with crappy streets!

And I agree 100% with his comments on “right” riding behavior.
