Bicycle Commuter Profile: Christopher Cove

Bicycle Commuter Profile

Name: Christopher Cove
Location: Pittsford, NY
Started bike commuting: 3 years ago
Commute distance (one way): 8 miles

Describe your commute: I commute along the Erie Cannel multipurpose path for 7 miles with 1 mile of street commute. I ride every day (except for heavy snow because the canal is not plowed). I am a physician and ride even when I am on call because it is faster than driving in traffic.

Describe your bike and accessories: Norco Ceres, Gates Carbon Drive, Alfine 11 speed, Axiom Monsoon Paniers

What bit of advice would you like to share with new bike commuters?: Commit to doing it everyday because if you don’t, you will always find an excuse to not ride when you get up in the morning. And remember there is no such thing as bad weather just bad clothes!

Gorgeous picture, gorgeous ride. They’re in the process of converting a rail line to a trail out where I live, but it doesn’t connect to me, so I’m afraid I’m stuck with less spectacular street scenery.

How is the Ceres with the 11 working for you? I’m considering that combination myself when we start getting closer to winter and snow again.

Beautiful Fall shot in upstate NY. Miss those colors. How long before autumn starts again?

Garth- Thanks! Love the 11 but the low end is not quite low enough I think. I am having the front pulley changed to 46 from 50 and that was what the folks at Gates suggested. Since I am changing out the pulley I also decided to upgrade to the centertrack system. I bought the bike at Joe Bike in Portland. Both JB and Gates have been great to deal with.

Thanks for the information, Christopher. A few other people had a similar comment about the 11 on one of Alan’s earlier posts. I’ll bet I could get Joe Bike to swap out the pulley out of the box. Sounds like it might be a good idea, as I live on a pretty steep river bluff, and have to deal with some hills (luckily after work on the way home!).

Garth- No question that they would do that. Joe Bike is great and I think Gates will recommend that set-up for all the 11′s. I will post once I get the parts in!
