Bicycle Commuter Profile: KrisAnne

Name: KrisAnne
Location: Minneapolis, MN
Started bike commuting: 2008
Commute distance (one way): 7 miles

Describe your commute: I mostly ride side streets or trails. I’m trying to get better about leaving earlier, going a little more slowly, maybe, and finding the most comfortable ride instead of the shortest distance from point A to point B. I’m currently getting used to a new bike without shocks and can’t take some of the major pothole-ridden streets I used to!

Describe your bike and accessories: Up until last fall I rode a Raleigh SC40 that I inherited from a friend who moved and couldn’t take it with him. I just got around to upgrading a few weeks ago and took a big leap up to the Civia Hyland. I’m still adjusting it/to it, though I love love love the gearing and the way it shifts. I never needed more than 8 gears on my old bike either. So far the weather has been fine for riding in street clothes, so I just use an old, old Novara trunk bag for my wallet, phone, lunch, etc. I’ll be shopping for panniers in the next few weeks because I’ll have to shower and change at work once the temp goes up. I put a folding Wald basket on my old bike and carried EVERYTHING in it–groceries, library books, CSA share, clothes, you name it.

What bit of advice would you like to share with new bike commuters?: Start out with whatever bike you have, as long as the fit is reasonable, there’s air in the tires, and the brakes work! I rode a long time on a bike I didn’t pick out for myself and it helped me figure out what I needed/wanted in a bike.
