[Jeff sent us these photos of his Surly Long Haul Trucker. —ed.]
Here’s my 2011 Surly Long Haul Trucker. It’s my fiftieth birthday present to myself ;) Thanks for the great site!

What a great birthday present! I have the 2008 LHT and love it.
Hi Jeff, I bought a LHT two years ago after I turned 49. I didn’t realize it was an early 50th birthday present to myself until now :-)
LOVE the thermos location. It says a lot about the bike, the bag, the rider. I too have a (stock) black LHT self-gifted after I fortunately lost re-election to the uber-contentious Oceanside City Council. Thanks for the photos.
I have a great insulated mug that fits nicely in my waterbottle rack. The only ones I’ve found that actually keep things hot (after a couple hours liquids can still be pleasantly warm) are sold by Starbucks. Not all their mugs fit in waterbottle racks, but they have a few that will. In commute mode, my seat tube rack holds the mug and the downtube rack holds a water bottle :-)
I just bought a LHT, too. Mine is blue, but seeing yours I wish now I got black!
I have the same Topeak rack and rear bag – I really like them. Topeak stuff doesn’t get much respect, but it’s a good value and works well for normal commuting needs.
Hmm I have 3+ years to scheme up a good bike half Century birthday present for myself
Jeff that is one sharp looking LHT, I seriously considered one back in ’08 and ended up buying the Handsome Devil which is very similar like you I built it up with Rando style bars, a B17 saddle, Sugino triple crank and some MKS platform pedeals. Did I mention what excellent taste you have? Seriously enjoy that fine birthday ride
Nice looking bike. What kind of lights are those on the fork?
What bars are you running there? I like..
Thanks for the compliments everyone!
@ Brian. Those lights on the fork are Blackburn Voyager “Click”.
@ John. The bars are Salsa moto Ace Woodchipper with Specialized Bar Phat Gel Pads and tape.
Beautiful ride Jeff, and I think it’s a great celebration of your entrance into your 50’s. If only more teens and twenty-somethings would clue in! Just curious, are you happy with those bars? Did you consider any other flared drops. How did you decide on these?
@ Mike T.
Long story short Mike, I got a chance to try these out on a Salsa Fargo and really liked them. The angled hoods, short ramps, and long drops feel perfect to me.
Excuse me, but I also ride an LHT, at the age of 18, bought it at the age of 16. It was the best investment of my life. Nothing makes me happier than riding my LHT.
