Woodpecker Alley (another reason to park the car)

A Favorite Spot on the Trail

This is one of my favorite spots to stop on the trail in the evening. We call it “Woodpecker Alley” because there are almost always Woodpeckers there doing their thing. It’s also a good place to see pheasants ruffling in the brush. The amazing thing is that it’s smack in the middle of a city of 115,000. You can bet that the auto commuters whizzing by at 50 mph one block away have no idea what they’re missing. You’ve gotta’ love bike commuting…

My route to work takes me up the Niagara Escarpment along side the Niagara River. At this point, the river flows though a gorge about 200 feet deep. Very occasionally, the moon will be in just the right phase , the weather conditions just perfect, and the gorge will be bathed in brilliant moonlight. To say the view is breath taking would be an understatement, and you can’t even see it from a car.

When I see a picture like that, I feel like grabbing my bike and going for a country ride…after I climb over the snowbanks, avoid slipping on the ice, and don’t inhale too much of the salt dust. Anyway, today it’s a gorgeous day. While it was – 12 degrees C this morning (and so I folded the Dahon and took it on a streetcar), in 30 minutes I will enjoy a blissful 20-km ride along the shore of Lake Ontario back home, while it’s sunny, -1 degree C and a slight tail wind. Ahhhh, the ecstasy of biking… Keep on posting more pics like this.
