A Winter Chill

Today was the first day this year that I felt a real winter chill in the air on my morning commute. It made me a little sad for the long, warm days of summer, if only for a moment. I do enjoy winter riding; the dark, dark mornings and cold, damp air can be exhilarating, though they also make it much harder to get out of bed and hit the road early. If nothing else, it was a good reminder to appreciate and enjoy the changing seasons as they ebb-and-flow throughout the year.

I like your take, Alan. I’ll miss riding on warm early mornings. But, it’s also fun to break out the wool as the season changes, followed by the waterproof layers for the winter rains here in the Bay Area. Then, it’ll be time to pack them all away and bring out the shorts and short sleeves again in the spring. It’s become a way of tracking time for me, as well. Happy riding.
Love it! Break out the wool jerseys, the wool knickers, waterproofs. I started thinking about my earmuffs while riding in this morning, and I just put the fenders back on last week..
“winter chill” is exactly what one of my bus stop buddies said this morning in Santa Cruz ;-)
Your seasonal ebb and flow reminds me of what’s going on in the Midwest right now, with their tornadoes and what not.
I’m all for the chilly weather. We finally got some nice cold weather here in DC and then Mother Nature went slapped me in the face and gave us at least another week of 70-80 temps. Ugh.
I just find it so much more pleasurable to ride in the cold. It doesn’t take much to get me too uncomfortably hot to ride. But there’s a huge range of cold temps to ride in. Mmmmm….
I had my first winter chill last week – the valley trail system in downtown Toronto can be beautiful during the fall but you definitely feel the drop in temperature as you drop into it!
Its funny how when fall comes I actually love the change in temperature – cooler rides and less sweat. Of course in a few months I’ll be cursing the cold wishing for some good old 30C sweaty summer days!
It’s spring here in Sydney Australia and wearer is perfect for commuting. Only wish it was like this all year round. Great photo.
