Gallery: Jeff’s Step-Thru Raleigh Sports
This is a 1970′s Ladies Raleigh Sports. Bicycle was made in Nottingham, England. My wife has been wanting a Raleigh for quite some time. I was able to acquire the bicycle from the original owner and present it to my wife for our recent wedding anniversary. I added the Velo Orange Tourist Bars and cork grips. A rear rack, Barley Bag, front light, and Rivendell bell are on the way. Nothing fancy, just a little piece of bicycle history that we are proud to restore and enjoy. —Jeff

These bikes are really well built. I rode one around NYC for 3 months last summer, and it just felt indestructible.
I always appreciate seeing older bikes in the gallery, but it’s especially nice to see someone giving new life to a respectable old Raleigh. It’s giving me a lot of impetus to get to work on that Twenty I just bought…
Ahh, what a lovely bike! My mom has had the same one in red since I can remember. I even found the original user manual and sales receipt, and pin-pointed the build date using the serial number: http://www.flickr.com/photos/nlaspf/sets/72157622350349952/.
I also remember there being a front basket (which I think was an original accesory) but I have no idea what happened to it.
Love these old Raleigh’s!
I managed to pick up a matching pair of his and hers last summer for $250 on Craigslist. They’re actually old SuperCycle badged bikes from Canadian Tire (a Canadian chain of automotive parts etc.). As most of us up here know, SuperCycles are not regarded in any way as quality bikes, but if your knowledgeable about bikes you can find these vintage re-badged Raleigh’s all over the place for a great price! Just wanted to point that out for those interested.
About a month ago I picked up a 1971 Triumph on CL for $130. Pretty much a Raleigh with a different badge. Mint condition and still has the original tires/tubes. Took it apart, cleaned and lubed it and it’s almost like new. I’ve been riding it to work lately and enjoying every minute of it. Those Sturmey Archer AW hubs are an amazing little piece of engineering.
