Five Boro Bike Tour

New York’s 5 Boro Bike Tour attracted 32,000 (!) fun-loving bicyclists this weekend. This non-competitive ride is one of the largest in the country.

Ken Podziba, CEO of Bike New York, the advocacy group that organized the event, said, “This is my favorite event, because you can see the city in a whole different way and take the time to smell the roses.”

The Tour raised $750,000 for charity.

    What? No recumbents?

Too wobbly at low speeds (kidding!) ;-)

I rode in this tour for the my first time this year. Everything was perfect, the weather, the riders, the volunteers, the city. I traveled from Ohio to NYC by train with my folding bicycle in the overhead storage. I rode my bicycle right out of Penn Station. Stayed at Hostel International – New York (Great accommodations and staff).

The best part beyond meeting so many friendly New Yorkers was being able to see so much of New York City and their many wonderfully unique neighborhoods. My only complaint is that I didn’t stop nearly enough to take more photographs.

This tour is large, and has some bottlenecks. During the bicycle traffic jams at bottlenecks I had some great conversations with various other riders.

This tour is worth doing again and again.

BTW – There were several recumbent bicycles and tricycles. In fact, I think I saw just about every conceivable type bicycle and tricycle. The ride is a cycle spotters paradise.

I just watched the extended version of the video on the Bike NY site and it has one recumbent in it and the rider talks to the camera for a few seconds.
