Wasted Time

The Infrastructurist has a graphic showing the amount of time Americans spend commuting today versus 1977. Among the largest cities, Seattle is the only one showing improvement. The data was pulled from the Texas Transportation Institute’s 2009 Urban Mobility Report.

It is interesting to note that the big cities that are really spread out, ( e.g., houston, dallas, atlanta, la) seem to have the most time wasted. These are cities with a lot of territory for expansion that boomed during the time we built cities around the automobile.

Man am I glad I don’t have to fight the rat race in those cities! I dislike driving as it is, small wonder people are rude and obnoxious after being caged up like that.

I think that the following excerpt from a comment by LA to the original article in the Infrastructurist must be carefully read :
“I think the most important issues exist specific to the development medium (auto oriented suburbs versus denser suburbs, high rises surrounded by parking versus dense midrises, etc)”.

As petrol price is becoming an issue for many, what would be the solution for them ?
To my opinion, never hope to get any public transportation in each street of these giant suburbs : this would probably cost too much…
Would mixing modes be a solution ? Yes, maybe, but to a certain commuting time limit.
