Handsome Devils are great looking frames at a fantastic price, I only wish they offered more than three sizes.

  • Doug R. says:

WOW, it looks very much like my white 1992 Bridgestone XO-1! Great looker!

  • Eddie says:

From Alfine 11 to HD fixie, you shift gears quickly, Alan.

  • ethan says:

    *whimper*

  • Surly John says:

Think Alfine 11 in the Handsome Devil frame. I am looking forward to your comments on this frame Alan. Might make a good home for my Rohloff.

  • louis says:

I’d be very interested to know how this frame handles with any kind of weight on both the front and rear.
Or, to put it another way, “Is this going to be significantly different from my Surly Cross Check”?

    thx,
    Louis

  • jamesmallon says:

Might make a great light-touring/randonneuring bike, with the right components. Like the olive better, myself. Looks less chunky than Surly’s offerings, apart from the Pacer which won’t take better than 28mm w/ fenders, and FAR less spendy than Rivendell. Comparable to Velo-Orange?. Have to get close-ups on the frames to choose between them.

  • Bob says:

Handsome’s numbers put the trail at 45 mm. As you’re used to putting weight up front on a decidedly NOT low-trail LHT, I’m interested to hear your thoughts on the Devil’s handling. Load that rear end up, too, for comparison.

  • Alan says:

    Hi Bob,

You’re right, the Devil has relatively low trail numbers. It behaves very nicely with the Nitto rack and basket up front, with less tendency to flop than my LHT with its Pass & Stow. I’ll throw a rear rack on there this week and try some rear loading as well.

    Regards,
    Alan

  • Alan says:

    @james

I’ll have close-ups for you when the review is published.

    Alan

  • Doug R. says:

Hey guys, the trail is one factor in the handling of the Devil, but what about ‘Contact” patch from the size of the front tire? I am curious as to what size you are running, and moreover, is it 700 series or 650b ? Tire widths/sizes often make a huge difference! Dougman.

  • jamesmallon says:

As well as trail, isn’t headtube angle an issue for front end handling/stability? Too complicated for me to figure without just riding.

  • Doug R. says:

@jamesmallon, the head tube angle sets up the rake of the bike and the trail is the benefit of the rake. Yes, you are right! Alan, maybe post a pic or two of head tube/ trail geometry.

I’ll state my bias up front I am a HD owner-built it July of ’09- and really enjoy it, my first Steel road bike and quite a departure from my 1999 Cannondale R800 aluminum Roadie.

Looking forward to your review and as always your wonderful photos Alan. Especailly interested to see more of your front rack setup.
