House Cleaning: Basil Kavan II Panniers

Now and again you’ll see a few things come up for sale here as we clean out our overflowing bike closet. This time it’s a pair of Basil Kavan II Natural panniers. These are super nice canvas and leather shopping/commuting panniers manufactured in the Netherlands. We purchased two pair of these about 18 months ago. We’re keeping one pair to share between us and we’re selling the second. They’re in great shape, no tears or stains, and they haven’t been used in the rain. Retail was $175, we’re selling these for $100, buyer pays shipping (continental U.S. only please). Read more about them here.

Were you really able to use those panniers on the nitto top rack?
do you know of any panniers that will fit on that rack?

Picked up a pair a few weeks ago they just make it around a Surly Nice Rack which is wide as can be. My only problem with them so far has been getting the fasteners to the top of the rack to stay attached they seem to work themselves free overtime, wish they had a buckle like the lower fasteners.

I have to wonder if you’re threading the straps through correctly. It took me a while to figure out, but once I threaded the straps in a particular way, they never came loose at all. This isn’t a great photo, but it might help:

I just slung them over the rack for the photo. The top rack is not designed to carry panniers.

Love the Basil stuff, and that was a heck of a good price for those.

    Dan,
Run the loose end through the buckle from the outside in then over the loose metal rung then back under the bottom rung of the buckle. You should be able to pull tight at that point and it won’t loosen.

Thanks guys I’ll give it a shot when I get home.
