A cyclist can go much faster than a pedestrian with about 4-5 times less energy consumption. But be careful. What made this possible are ball bearings, and chain transmission systems. There are many other odd types of bikes out today that hardly match the efficiency of conventional bikes.
If anyone’s interested I have compared the energy and effot of riding a century vs. running a marathon. Click here to read.
Ofcourse, how you judge the difficulty will be a personal thing but I think a majority will agree than running a marathon is much more physically demanding and thermodynamically less efficient compared to riding on wheels.
3 weeks or so to go until I move back to a Mac from PC land… true, I’ll still have to run some of my Apps in XP… but I’ll be able to most of my non technical work on the Mac side.

That is SOOO cool! This is the youtube of youtubes!
Where’s this efficiency of locomotion study?
mr. jobs is taking a medical leave of absence, reports indicate. wish the man well.
jobs was riffing, i think, on ivan illich, particularly this passage: http://clevercycles.com/energy_and_equity/#degofs
Now I’ll have to get an iphone to show my approval for this message…or take my classic mac and strap it to the handlebars to use as a GPS. :)
@Perry

This is a great post. Thanks Alan.
i still have my “body computer” (unicycle) i “log/leg on” and my internal gyroscope is still working. but it’s like comparing apples to banana seats.
