An Early Morning Commute

Today was my first pre-dawn commute since coming back from my knee injury. I had almost forgotten how much I enjoy traveling by bike in the early morning as the rest of the world is waking up.

I am glad to hear your knee is better. I also had a nice early morning commute. I rode my new Corsa. Great fun, shaved 10 minutes off my average commute time by my Terratrike Tour. The difference in my case was the hill climbing speed.
Congrats, Alan. Welcome back to the saddle. Now no more monkey business with saddle height and such. Stay on that bike–or else!

I love riding in the early morning, and there’s a camraderie among early-morning cyclists that I don’t feel at other times of the day. The only downside I’ve experienced is that birds and other wildlife are especially active around dawn, and when I ride in summer I tend to have more close calls and occasional accidents than at other times of the day. Last summer I ran over a squirrel that darted into the bike path during my early-morning ride, and the very next day I ran over a juvenile redwing blackbird that flew down in front of my front wheel. Both animals were killed instantly, I felt terrible. On the other hand it’s a great time of day to see wildlife: when I lived in Vermont I would frequently see deer, occasionally bears, and once a fisher…all during my early-morning rides before work.
Thanks guys..
