A Chill in the Air

We had to really layer up today for the first time this fall. It was kind of nice to feel the chill – we always enjoy the changing of the seasons.

You guys look so happy and comfy riding those big upright cruisers that it makes me question going back to an upright bike…almost. :-)

  • Alan says:

They’re pretty comfy, but not quite like your bike! :-)

We do love ‘em for short rides around town though, which is what they’re made for and mostly what we do these days.

  • Croupier says:

Maybe a strange question (apologies in advance if I offend you): Does anyone else end up with an icy cold groin after a ride in this weather? My balls felt like frozen bonbons by the time I got to the grocery store yesterday. Anyone have some secret advice in this area that I somehow failed to pick up on in my short few years spent amongst “serious” cyclists.
The other day was the first time I’ve noticed this on my bike but I’ve occasionally experience something similar on a motorcycle.

    @Croupier

It sounds like you need one of them new-fangled “recumbents” with a front windshield thingie. Perhaps you know where to obtain one…? ;-)

  • Deb says:

We had cooler weather last week, but it is back warmish this week, and I”m finding myself overdressed in a long sleeve t-shirt and light windbreaker.

Croupler, I read somewhere that some men use plastic bags to combat the problem you describe. I didn’t pay that close attention, but maybe it gives you some ideas.

  • RJ says:

Aha, as cyclists we can actually EXPERIENCE the changing of the seasons instead of DENYING it by moving from air conditioned box to air conditioned box to air conditioned box and back again. (That’s home to car to work.)

  • Eddie says:

Croupier, bon-bon wrappers may provide velophylactic protection but I’d think it would interfere with sensation. Embrace the brisk autumn chill!

    cool shot!!
Im always in layers and end up not really bundled up, unless it gets super windy, then Im putting everything back on :)

  • andy parmentier says:

    definitely (croupier),
remember to LAYER (wool undies, windbreaking nylon shorts, and even in extreme conditions, snowbibs, which you could turn into cut-offs, like a pair of old jeans)

  • David Hembrow says:

There’s nothing wrong with having both, of course. I love my recumbent for touring, but for pootling around town a proper upright is the way to go.

  • Duncan Watson says:

I love my recumbents. For pootling around town I like my trike actually. It is the easiest to stop and go with. But I am obsessed with my recumbents and there are many times a folding bike would be great though I don’t own one. I might be tempted to get a grasshopper fx one day.

Hands down my favorite time of year–for everything. One can now crank hard up big grades without pouring gallons of sweat. No bugs are swarming. The air is clear and bright. I have fantasies of living my own “endless autumn” kind of like that old surfing movie “Endless Summer.” Only I would bike and hike and climb rocks!

This time last year I was pushing across the Mojave on a trans-continental solo tour. Down in the low desert it was in the 80′s while back in Cleveland, which I had crossed through in late Aug. it was snowing–amazing.

    Ride before it snows!

    Scott
