Gallery: Bob’s GT MTB

Here are photos of my beater-commuter—an ugly bike, but it gets me around! It is an old (1996 or earlier vintage?), GT mountain bike with broken fenders and broken shifter for the rear derailleur. It has the Shimano Hyperdrive chainrings and a Shimano GTX rear derailleur. As you can see the handlebars are somewhat different in that they curve upward and away from the stem. What is totally unique about this bike, however, is that the chain is “locked†on the middle cog of the freewheel. This is because the shifter for the rear derailleur broke. This leaves me with a 3-speed bicycle (shifting between chainrings) with rather large jumps between gears for my commute to and from work. This is OK as the commute (5 miles one-way, 5 days a week) is relatively flat terrain. On Saturday mornings, I bicycle to the Farmers Market (I help my wife who is the manager of the market set up and take down equipment for the market). Of course, I ride my bike for all local errands (grocery store, post office, etc.). I estimate a total average weekly mileage of 40 to 45 miles. I do not want to spring the money to replace the front shifter because I am saving my money for a recumbent bicycle. I want a recumbent bike because my hands and arms get numb after 5 to 10 minutes of riding my bike. —Bob

i bought my tour easy from gardner martin at easy racers in 2004. it was a trade-in that i got for $1300. i also ride a unicycle, and look at spincyclz for used crank-forwards because i like to window shop. i passed up a rans dynamik on ebay for real cheap, but then again my unicycle travels so well, and i might never have gone to alaska that year..
