Gallery: RJ’s Surly Long Haul Trucker w/Free Radical

How I use it: everyday, all the time! I don’t own a car, so my Xtra Surly goes to the grocery store, the thrift store, the community garden, the farmers market, the coffee shop, potlucks, you name it. Even Home Despot.
Make, model & other notes: I’m rollin’ on the ’07 Surly Long Haul Trucker (with 26″ wheels) with the much coveted Xtracycle attachment. Other specs of note include a pink Chris King headset, Phil Wood bottom bracket, Mavic XC 717 Cross Rims 32h 3-cross pattern and shimano bar-end shifters tuggin’ on a 9-speed. Delicious. —RJ

RJ,
What kind of “Plants” are those that you’re hauling on that Extracycle?
They look kinda FUNNY to me: Kinda like those California LEGAL plants. :- ) :- ) :- )
in homer alaska last summer (a working vacation), met owner of local bike shop (cycological)
rides a surly. met a young woman on a surly at the local farmer’s market. i think she was touring. and saw a wildfire designs fatbike in town (made in palmer, ak) which is like the surly fatbike-and they make fat unicycles too. (i was riding my uni with a 28″ big apple on it.
there was an italian place in town there that served 28 inch pizzas and a new yorker who ran an organic farm there
Is it advisable to run a tandem rated rear wheel with the Xcycle?
How do you find the Xtra handles with a heavy loads and drop bars?
I love drops on my other bikes, but I’ve been running Titec H-bars on my Big Dummy for the great leverage they provide to control big loads.
safe riding,
Vik

~~~Hey Vik, I’m using drop bars on my Xtra-sized Surly LHT and don’t see a problem with leverage, but then I’m a bit of a burly lad (6’1″, 245 lbs.) Also too, most of my riding is done on paved roads just plodding along. The handling equation might change if I were to explore off road twisty paths but I haven’t yet just riding paved public roads and all is well using the drop bars
